Jakarta-KLHK Officer from the National Park Management Section (SPTN) Kep. One Thousand Region III Scout Island, rescuing the species of hawksbill (Eretmocelys imbricata) stranded on the central part of Kotok Besar Island on Friday, March 13, 2020. Information on the presence of stranded turtles was obtained from a report via telephone from Brother Mirjan who was one of the staff of the Jakarta Animal Aid Network (JAAN).
Hawksbill carapace size 35 cm x 40 cm when found in a weak condition, the whole body and shell are filled with barnacles and when put in water the head does not want to rise/lift. The first attempt to rescue the poor turtle was to bring it to the JAAN mess on Kotok Besar Island in the eastern part to get temporary treatment, such as cleaning the shells, legs, and fins by removing its barnacles, then smearing the scar with alcohol.
After signing the Minutes of Protected Animal Submission, the turtle was then taken to Pramuka Island. At present, the turtle is cared for at the Turtle Sanctuary on Pramuka Island in a special enclosure that is separated from the other turtles, as well as getting intensive care.
“It is hoped that after undergoing a series of rehabilitation processes for some time, these animals are ready to be re-released into their natural habitat,” said the Head of Kep National Park Kep. A Thousand, Badi’ah in separate places (*)
