Minister of LHK Inaugurates Waste Management Facilities in the Six Districts and Cities of the Citarum Watershed

Minister of Environment and Forestry (LHK) Siti Nurbaya (fourth from the left) invites the public to participate in reducing and managing waste in the Citarum watershed.

The Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK) accelerates the implementation and sustainability of the policy to control the Citarum watershed through prevention operations, prevention of pollution, and damage and recovery of the Citarum watershed.

In the framework of implementing pollution and damage control in 2018, the Ministry of Environment and Forestry has facilitated the provision of waste management facilities and infrastructures.

The provision of facilities and infrastructure for waste management is in the form of a recycling center (PDU) which is given to three districts/cities namely Bandung Regency, Bandung City, and Cimahi City with a capacity of 10 tons/day and composting facilities with a capacity of 10-30 tons/day.

In addition, through the operation of the Recycling Center facility, it is possible to reduce Greenhouse Gas emissions by around 5,000 tons – CO2 / year, and cost-effectiveness of around Rp2 million / tonne – CO2 / year.

An important part of this facility is to control the formation of Methane gas by reducing the amount of waste that is stockpiled, and therefore reducing CO2 emissions for energy sources is 50 tons – CO2 / year through grouping and increasing the effectiveness of transportation for transporting waste to the final processing site.

Second, the main waste bank (BSI) in six districts/cities, namely Bandung Regency, Bandung City, Cimahi City, Subang Regency, Karawang Regency, and Bekasi City with a capacity of 1 ton/day.

Third, the provision of 60 segregated trash bins and 35 three-wheeled garbage units in six districts/cities, namely Bandung Regency, Bandung City, Cimahi City, Bekasi City, Subang Regency, and Karawang Regency.

All support facilities provided by the government to six districts/cities in the Citarum watershed are expected to increase the capacity of waste management and become a stimulant for local governments to encourage waste management that puts forward the paradigm and concept of “waste reduction” based on 3R (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle).

“Community participation and regional waste management capacity in the Citarum watershed are increasing so that it can reduce the burden on final processing in landfills (TPA).”

“This effort can also increase circular economic in waste management in the easiest and simplest way, starting from ourselves, reducing waste generation, intentions not to dispose of litter, not burning rubbish and sorting waste from source and by utilizing waste into useful items and has promising economic value, “said Minister of Environment and Forestry (LHK) Siti Nurbaya when inaugurating waste management facilities in six Citarum watershed districts in Bandung on Monday (4/15/2019).

In addition, in the context of the Acceleration of Pollution and Damage Control of the Citarum Watershed, KLHK is synergistically and continuously by integrating programs and activities in each Ministry / Institution including the optimization of personnel and operating equipment. garbage collector through a waste bank along the Citarum watershed, so that the community is expected to participate in waste management.
